Smoke gets in your eyes: Vaping - Dr Amanda Phoon Nguyen

Using electronic cigarettes or a vape is a practice commonly known called as ‘vaping’. It is estimated that 1.2% of Australians now vape, and this number is increasing. Shockingly, children as young as 5 years of age have been reported to vape. There exist many misconceptions on vape use, such as it being “harmless”, and while there are increasing regulations around vaping, to date, it is still accessible. Amanda will discuss some of these misconceptions and regulations, research on the topic, and an approach to discussing cessation with patients.

Learning objectives:

  • Recognize the effects of vaping on the oral cavity
  • Identify common misconceptions on vaping
  • Gain familiarity with some of the current research on vape use
  • How to approach conversations about vaping with patients

Volunteering is a Work of Heart - Aileen Lewis

My presentation will cover my overseas volunteer ventures to Vietnam, and Mongolia as well as local volunteering in Perth and it will include a variety of interesting photos. I will share my volunteering travels and dental services with:

  • Rotary Melbourne in 2016 to the Mekong province of Vietnam 2017
  • with my husband, Steve and the Children’s (formerly Christian) Health Aid Team in North Vietnam for one week in 2018,
  • traveling with my sister Joe (a school teacher) to Mongolia for four weeks throughout the rural communities visiting orphanages of the CARITAS Catholic Church and local families along the route. I provided oral health lessons and toothbrushing instruction while my sister taught basic English to the children. Some had mild to severe special needs, and some had never seen many foreign people let alone had a dental visit.
  • my volunteer work RUAH (Northbridge) and uniting care West Tranby Centre (East Perth), community agency AYLA (Assisting Your Life to Achieve) with the LGBTQIA+ community and the Sydney World Pride event in 2023.
  • the WA Children’s Week that is advocated by DHAA and encourages OHT students to volunteer every year at Wynnum Park at Caversham. This session will share the joys and passion that comes with volunteering and improving oral health outcomes for those in need.

Learning objectives:

  • To encourage other clinicians and interested people to volunteer either within Australia or internationally to improve health outcomes and to add the humanitarian cause
  • To impart awareness of the health, disparities overseas, and what volunteering can do to help
