Recognising the signs of domestic violence is not always easy. If you were confronted with it in your practice would you know what to do?
Domestic violence refers to violent behaviour between current or former intimate partners – typically where one partner tries to exert power and control over the other, usually through fear. It can include physical, sexual, emotional, social, verbal, spiritual and economic abuse.

Family violence is a broader term that refers to violence between family members, which can include violence between current or former intimate partners, as well as acts of violence between a parent and a child, between siblings, and more.
It may not always take the form of physical assault. Behaviour towards victims can include limiting their access to finances, preventing them from contacting family and friends, demeaning and humiliating them, threatening them or their children with injury or death, and acts of physical violence.

For this reason it is often harder to identify. Knowing the signs can help you recognise when violence may be occurring and allow you to take appropriate steps to intervene.

Catherine is the Domestic and Family Violence Co-ordinator at the Princess Alexandra Hospital and previously has been the principal Social Work clinician to the hospital’s Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit for over 13 years. Ms Walsh has practised Social Work in Australia and the United Kingdom. She specialises in domestic and family violence, staff training, grief and loss, crisis intervention, trauma informed practice, risk assessments and disaster management. Ms. Walsh has developed expertise in advocating and supporting those affected by domestic and family violence.

You can still attend our events by creating a purchase account at the link above. This will be a non-member account where you can register for events and track your event registrations. It does not allow you access to member benefits or the members portal, these are only accessible by joining as a DHAA member.

  • DHAA Event Regulations

    • DHAA Members - To obtain the discounted DHAA Ltd Membership price you are required to be a financial member of the DHAA Ltd at the time of the event.

      Student Members - Student Members must be an eligible and current student member of the DHAA Ltd at the time of the event Student Membership expires June 30th following your graduation. Student Membership to the DHAA Ltd is Free.

      ADOHTA Members - All ADOHTA members are required to show proof of membership to ADOHTA. You are required to be a current member at the time of the event to either DHAA Ltd or ADOHTA inc. To access the discounted price please create an account and email proof of current membership to [email protected]. We will update your account to display the correct registration price for the duration of the membership period displayed in your proof of membership.

      Dietary Requirements - We will attempt to accommodate all dietary requirements. Please ensure you specify any dietary restrictions when registering and at least seven (7) days prior to the event so we can notify the event catering team. 

      Photography Policy - The DHAA reserve the right to take photographs and videos for publicity, illustration, advertising, web content and reports on events and symposia. These images will not be shared directly with any other business without prior consent. If you would prefer your image NOT be used, then please notify us in advance, in writing, of the event that you are attending to [email protected]

      Event Cancellation Policy

      If you are cancelling your registration to attend an event please contact us at [email protected]

      If notification is received:

      More than 5 working days before the event:

      - A partial refund less a cancellation fee of 10% of the registration fee will be given.

      Less than 5 working days before the event:

      - Event registration fees will not be refunded 5 working days from the event as catering will have been finalised and therefore incurred non-refundable costs to the DHAA.

      Alternatively, the event registration may be transferred to another person of the same DHAA membership status up to 24 hours prior to the event - please contact [email protected] to arrange a transfer.

      Non Attendance
      If a registered attendee fails to attend an event for which they have registered, the event registration fees will not be refunded.

      COVID-safe and booking with confidence
      We know that the world has changed and there is always going to be uncertainty around events in the age of a pandemic, so here is our approach to making this work:

      - The event will be fully COVID-safe and compliant above and beyond any basic government health requirements to do what we reasonably can to protect your health and safety and that of all attendees. That will include appropriate social distancing and other measures.
      - COVID event cancellation: if the event is cancelled or has to be moved due to COVID issues, we will offer you a full refund. - If you’re unwell please contact us at [email protected] for assistance.

        While we do our best to ensure everyone's comfort, venue temperatures may vary. We suggest you bring layers to allow you to adjust your own comfort levels as needed throughout the day.

        Our webinars are run through the Zoom.us online platform. Please ensure when logging on to the Zoom platform for the first time that you enter your full name and email address as this information is used to register your attendance and award your CPD certificate.
